Why the range is so wide

  • Your prescription. Headline 'from' prices are for low prescriptions; at some clinics fewer than a quarter of eyes assessed qualify for the lowest price.
  • The treatment. Surface treatment (LASEK, PRK) starts lowest, LASIK sits in the middle, SMILE is about €2,600 an eye, and implantable lenses and lens replacement cost €2,900 to €3,900.
  • Custom treatment. Wavefront or topography-guided treatment starts from about €2,000 an eye.
  • The setting. Hospital-based eye centres can sit at the top of the range.
  • Aftercare. How many check-ups, for how long, and whether a top-up is included.

What isn't a factor

Your county. Clinics in Cork, Galway and Dublin charge in the same range, and the assessment and check-ups often happen at smaller clinics nearer home. What changes outside the cities is the travel time, not the price.

After tax relief

Laser treatment for defective eyesight qualifies for health expenses relief at 20%. On LASIK for both eyes at €3,000 to €5,200, you get €600 to €1,040 back, so it costs €2,400 to €4,160. How to claim.

Before you pay a deposit

Get the price in writing after your assessment, per eye and for both, with the aftercare listed. Don't book or pay on the day of a free consultation. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists advises at least a week between seeing the surgeon and deciding, and a deposit you can get back.

Questions people ask

How much is laser eye surgery for both eyes in Ireland?
