The prices
| Treatment | Per eye | Both eyes |
|---|---|---|
| Implantable contact lens | €2,900 to €3,900 | €5,800 to €7,800 |
| Lens replacement, monofocal | from €3,200 | from €6,400 |
| Lens replacement, multifocal | from €3,700 | from €7,400 |

Who these are for
An implantable lens suits prescriptions too high for laser (short sight up to about -18) and corneas too thin for it, from about 21. Lens replacement usually suits people from about 50, including those who need reading glasses: it is the same operation as cataract surgery.
What moves the price
- The lens: toric lenses for astigmatism and multifocal lenses cost more.
- The hospital or day-surgery unit.
- Follow-up included, often 12 months.
- Whether a laser top-up is included.
Tax relief
These treat defective eyesight rather than being routine eye care, so tax relief at 20% should apply as it does for laser. Keep the receipts.
Questions people ask
Why is an ICL more expensive than laser?
It is an operation inside the eye with a lens made for you, usually in a hospital setting.
Is lens replacement covered by health insurance?
Not as a treatment to reduce glasses. Cataract surgery is a different matter: ask your insurer about your own plan.
Do I need both eyes done?
Usually, yes, a week or so apart. Ask for the price for both eyes in writing.
