Do the sums for yourself
- Add up a year of contact lenses, solution, glasses, sunglasses with your prescription and eye tests.
- Multiply by the years until you are about 45, when reading glasses arrive anyway.
- Compare with the price after tax relief: €2,400 to €4,160 for LASIK on both eyes.
You will probably still have eye tests and, from your mid-forties, reading glasses. Count those on both sides.

When it is worth it
- Contact lenses irritate your eyes or you can't wear them.
- You swim, play sport or work where glasses get in the way.
- Your prescription has been steady for a year or more and your eyes are healthy.
When it may not be
- Your prescription is still changing.
- You are in your mid-forties and need reading glasses already: lens replacement may be the better investment in a few years.
- You already have dry eyes or poor night vision, which laser can make worse for a while.
- You'd be unhappy with any glare at night, which most people have at first.
The value of a good assessment
An assessment that tells you not to go ahead is worth paying for. Don't book or pay on the day of a free consultation. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists advises at least a week between seeing the surgeon and deciding, and a deposit you can get back.
Questions people ask
How long does laser eye surgery last?
The correction is permanent, but your eyes still age. Reading glasses arrive from the mid-forties either way.
Will I save money with laser eye surgery?
Often over ten years or more if you wear contact lenses every day. Less if you only wear glasses some of the time.
What do most people say afterwards?
We don't publish satisfaction figures. Ask the clinic for its own results for eyes like yours.
